5 Things to Do In-Between Job Assignments
Waiting on a call or an email about a job while unemployed can be a very frustrating time. Instead of getting stressed (and staying glued to your phone) here are five productive things you can do while you’re in-between job assignments.
Refresh Your Resume
Now is the perfect time to take a second look at your resume. Does it have your most recent employment? Has your contact information changed? Should you add a professional summary? Using a checklist like this one, go through your resume and make sure it’s the best it can be when it comes time to apply for the next job assignment. You can take it a step further by updating your work history on social sites like LinkedIn (or set up an account if you don’t have one.)
Keep In touch With Your Staffing Agency
Recruiters and hiring managers work hard every day to place job-seekers they work with. To keep yourself at the top of their mind, check in with them from time to time to let them know you’re still available for a new job assignment (just make sure you aren’t calling excessively!) You can also keep up with your staffing company online, so you’re up to date on the latest news and openings.
Take Care of Personal Errands
Trying to take care of personal things like doctor appointments or home repairs can be difficult to do while working. So take advantage of this time to get all of the errands and projects done that would be hard to do otherwise. By getting yourself organized and clearing your personal to-do list, you’ll be able to start the new job assignment stress-free.
Volunteer
It may seem counterintuitive to go somewhere and work for free while waiting for your next job assignment, but it can do wonders for yourself as well as others. Volunteering for charities that cater to people who are less fortunate than you can put your situation into perspective. It also gets you out of the house and keeps you busy. You may even learn some skills and experience that you can list on your resume.
Stay Vigilant In Your Job Search
It can be discouraging and frustrating waiting for that call for a job assignment but just know that it is only a temporary situation. Stay positive and keep looking; use a staffing agency -- if you aren’t already. They often help you find the jobs you wouldn’t find otherwise.
