Bad jobs happen. Maybe you had a boss who made every shift miserable. Maybe the hours kept changing, you weren't getting enough temporary work, or you were asked to do things you weren't trained to do. Maybe you just knew it wasn't the right place for you.

Whatever happened, don't let one bad job keep you from finding a better one.

To recover from a bad temporary work job, focus on what you can learn from it, what you want to be different next time, and what you can do right now to move forward. You don’t need to have your whole career figured out. Sometimes, you just need a fresh start and a chance to get back to work.

Give Yourself a Chance to Reset

Leaving a bad job can be a relief. It can also leave you angry, stressed, or worried about what’s next. That’s especially true when you have bills coming up and can’t afford to be out of work for long.

You don't have to spend weeks thinking about what happened. But before jumping into the next job, take a little time to figure out what made the last one such a bad experience.

Was it the boss? The schedule? The type of work? The commute? Not enough hours? Too much overtime? A lack of training?

Knowing what went wrong can help you avoid the same problem next time.

Don’t Let One Bad Job Make You Doubt Yourself

A bad job can make you wonder if you’re the problem. Don’t forget what you bring to the table. Think about what you did well.

Maybe you:

  • Showed up on time every day
  • Learned how to use new equipment
  • Worked safely
  • Kept up on a busy production line
  • Helped your crew finish a tough job
  • Stepping in when someone called out

Those things matter. Your last job may not have worked out, but the skills and experience you picked up there still go with you to the next one.

Figure Out What You Need from Your Next Job

You don’t need to know what you want to do for the next 20 years. Start with what you need right now.

You could need:

  • More hours
  • A steady schedule
  • Weekly pay
  • A job closer to home
  • Day, night, or weekend shifts
  • A different supervisor or work environment
  • Temporary work while you figure out your next move

Your next job doesn't have to be your forever job. It just needs to be a better next step.

If You Need Work Fast, Focus on What You Can Control

When money is tight, being out of work can get stressful fast. Instead of waiting for the perfect opportunity, focus on the things you can do today.

  • Update your contact information and recent work experience
  • Gather any licenses or certifications
  • Think about your availability and how far you can travel

You can also consider temporary work. Temporary jobs can help you start earning money while you look for something longer-term. They may also give you a chance to try different types of work and employers.

Don’t Trash Your Old Employer in an Interview

You may have plenty to say about your old job. Your next interview is not the place to say it. If someone asks why you left, keep your answer short and move the conversation toward what you want next.

For example:

“It wasn’t the right fit for me. I am looking for steady work where I can show up, work hard, and be part of a good team.”

Then you can discuss your experience, the kind of work you’d like, and why you’re interested in the new job.

Think Before You Post About Your Old Job

The same goes for social media. Posting when you’re angry might feel good for a few minutes, but it could cause problems later. A future employer doesn’t need to see a long post or review attacking your old boss or coworkers.

Your Last Job Doesn’t Decide What Happens Next

Maybe your last job didn't work out. That doesn't mean the next one won't.

Take what you learned from the experience and use it to make a better choice this time. You don't need a perfect resume, a college degree, or your entire future planned out to move forward. Sometimes, you just need someone to give you a chance to work.
